Walk The Course: Andrew 'Beef' Johnston
At the recent Andalucia Valderrama Masters, Anna Whiteley walked the course with the always-affable fan favourite, Andrew ‘Beef’ Johnston, who won at the famous venue in 2016.
While strolling the fairways of the glorious Real Club Valderrama Beef opened up to Anna on a variety of subjects, including his less than straightforward adaptation to life away from home comforts in America.
Having qualified to play on the PGA TOUR throughout the 2017 season courtesy of some strong performances at the Web.com Tour Finals in 2016, Beef planned to split his time successfully between America and Europe - but was happy to concede that his adjustment to a new-look schedule was tougher than he anticipated.
In fairness, it was always going to be a tough ask for Johnston to follow up a 2016 season that saw him make such a significant European Tour breakthrough at the Open de Espana, before a memorable run at The Open Championship and that solid late season showing in America to secure his PGA TOUR playing rights. He made it clear to Anna, however, that he has enjoyed the challenges of his first year as a truly global player, despite not delivering hugely on the results front.
Johnston was also keen to demonstrate his allegiance to the European Tour despite his American adventures and promised that no matter how well he plays on the PGA TOUR in years to come, that he would never turn his back on his homeland and the tour that offered him the perfect platform on which to make his name.
The more time you spend with Beef and the more you observe his approach to life, the harder it becomes to dislike him. His warmth and approachability are unfailing and it’s no surprise that fans worldwide have taken to him as they have.
We wish Beef well in the season to come, as he looks to recapture the spark that has somewhat eluded him since his impactful 2016 campaign.
