Michael Campbell Instruction Series

We have been lucky enough over the years to spend a fair amount of time with former U.S. Open Champion Michael Campbell and he has always made for an analytical and insightful interview subject.

It is perhaps no surprise then that he is now working as a coach and helping golfers of all ability levels to improve their games with his great depth of knowledge.

Michael has temporarily retired from playing the game though he is eyeing up a return to competitive golf in his fifties when the senior ranks become an option for him but in the meantime he is based in Marbella and remains very involved in the sport at which he has excelled.

Anna Whiteley recently traveled to his home course and the base for his coaching, Villa Padierna, where she was treated to three lessons with the man who bravely fought off the challenge of Tiger Woods in his prime to land the U.S. Open title at Pinehurst back in 2005.

Michael was immediately keen to break Anna's game down into component parts and lesson one was therefore spent focusing on her backswing and eradicating her common tendency to come over the top at impact.

Having tackled Anna's backswing, attention then turned to identifying flaws and making improvements to the other half of her swing with particular focus on initiating the downswing.

Having spent time together working on Anna's long game, in their third lesson at Villa Padierna it was time for Michael and Anna to take to the short game area. In this lesson Michael works on Anna's set up when playing around the greens and taking advice from some of the greatest ever exponents of the short game, including Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods and Seve Ballesteros.
