Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano looks to tame Tiger Woods

Spain's Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano believes he can tame Tiger Woods at Dove Mountain this week, as the pair face off in the opening rubber of the WGC-Accenture Match Play.

The former world number one holds no fear for the five-time European Tour winner, who views himself as the underdog.

"I have nothing to lose. And at the same time I don't think he's at his best so it's a good opportunity. If I play well I can beat him," said the world number 48.

Fernandez-Castano says Woods is one of the greatest to play the game, and is looking forward to learning from the experience.

And while Woods has won this event three times, his record in match play – Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup disappointments spring to mind – is not supreme.

"I think he's beatable," added the Spaniard, who has never even played with Woods in a stroke play contest.

This match-up is one of four Europe versus US contests in the opening round at Dove Mountain in Arizona.

Italy's Matteo Mannasero faces Webb Simpson, Open champion Darren Clarke plays Nick Watney, and Sweden's Peter Hanspon squares up to Jason Dufner in the other three.
